Summary

Bilateral thyroplasty surgery significantly improved voice-related quality of life in patients with age-related laryngeal changes compared to injection augmentation. Thyroplasty offered superior outcomes and patient satisfaction.

  • To compare the effectiveness of bilateral thyroplasty surgery versus injection augmentation for age-related laryngeal changes.

  • Retrospective chart review of 22 patients undergoing bilateral thyroplasty and/or injection augmentation.
  • Pre- and post-treatment evaluation using endoscopic imaging, patient self-rating questionnaires, and acoustic/aerodynamic measures.

Main Results:

  • Thyroplasty showed trends toward reduced vocal fold bowing and supraglottic activity compared to injection.
  • Significant improvement in Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) scores post-thyroplasty (25.5) versus injection (-16.4).
  • Patients undergoing thyroplasty were more likely to report significant treatment effects (64%) than those receiving injections (33%).

Conclusions:

  • Bilateral thyroplasty surgery leads to significant improvements in patient-reported voice quality and overall satisfaction.
  • Injection augmentation did not yield significant self-rated improvements compared to pretreatment.
  • Thyroplasty is a more effective treatment for improving voice quality in cases of age-related laryngeal changes.
