Clinical Trials: Overview

5.1K
Clinical development focuses on how the drug will interact with the human body and encompasses four key phases of clinical trials, each serving a specific purpose in assessing the safety and effectiveness of new drugs. These phases overlap and build upon one another. Phase I involves a small group of healthy volunteers (typically 20-80 individuals) or, in cases where significant toxicity is expected, patients with the targeted disease, such as cancer or AIDS. The volunteers are tested for...

Summary

Falls are common in older adults, causing significant injuries and costs. This study found that falls at home on hard floors, often involving walkers or specific footwear, are frequent. Prevention should focus on ambulation, body position, and assistive device use.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Public Health
  • Trauma Research

Background:

  • Falls are a major cause of death and disability in older adults, costing the US billions annually.
  • Existing fall prevention programs lack data on specific circumstances contributing to falls in community-dwelling older adults.
  • There is no existing repository of scene data to inform targeted prevention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To gather preliminary scene data on circumstances contributing to falls in older adults admitted to trauma centers.
  • To identify common environmental and behavioral factors associated with fall-related injuries in this population.
  • To inform the development of a comprehensive registry for older adult fall data.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter pilot study involving interviews with older patients (55+ years) admitted to trauma centers for fall-related injuries.
  • Data collected included environmental factors, behaviors, injury types, demographics, comorbidities, medications, and discharge information.
  • Descriptive statistical analysis of collected data from 49 participants.

Main Results:

  • Most falls occurred at home (65.0%) on hard flooring (51.1%).
  • Commonly reported factors included the use of walkers (36.7%) and specific footwear (44.2%).
  • The most frequent injuries were contusions and open wounds to the head (61.2%).

Conclusions:

  • Prevention efforts should emphasize educating older adults on safe ambulation, proper body positioning, and correct use of assistive devices.
  • Developing a systematic registry of fall scene data is crucial for informing public health agencies and creating effective fall prevention programs.
  • Such a registry could provide a large sample size for future research on factors associated with fall injury severity.
