Bipolar Disorder01:30

Bipolar Disorder

1.2K
Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition marked by significant mood fluctuations, including episodes of mania and depression. Elevated energy levels, heightened mood or irritability, impulsive behavior, reduced sleep needs, rapid speech, racing thoughts, inflated self-esteem, and distractibility characterize mania. Individuals with bipolar disorder often alternate between depressive and manic states, with periods of emotional stability lasting an average of six months to a year.

Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

1.0K
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

14.2K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Borderline Personality Disorder01:25

Borderline Personality Disorder

737
Borderline Personality Disorder is a complex and multifaceted mental health condition characterized by pervasive instability in interpersonal relationships, self-image, emotions, and impulse control. This instability manifests in extreme emotional reactions, fear of abandonment, and self-destructive behaviors. The disorder significantly impacts daily functioning, often leading to distress in both personal and professional domains.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Clinical Assessment

Background:

  • Bipolar Disorder (BD) significantly impacts quality of life.
  • Assessing resilience is crucial for managing BD.
  • Existing generic resilience measures may not fully capture BD-specific resilience.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the Resilience Questionnaire for Bipolar Disorder (RBD).
  • To evaluate the psychometric properties of the RBD in a BD population.
  • To assess the responsiveness of the RBD compared to generic resilience scales.

Main Methods:

  • Developed the 23-item, 5-factor Resilience Questionnaire for Bipolar Disorder (RBD).
  • Administered the RBD and established measures to 125 BD patients and 107 controls.
  • Conducted exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, and assessed internal consistency, stability, validity, and responsiveness over 6 months.

Main Results:

  • Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a 5-factor structure for the RBD.
  • The RBD demonstrated adequate psychometric properties, including internal consistency, stability, and validity.
  • The RBD showed higher responsiveness to changes in resilience over 6 months compared to a generic resilience scale in the BD sample.

Conclusions:

  • The Resilience Questionnaire for Bipolar Disorder (RBD) is a psychometrically sound and robust measure.
  • The RBD is suitable for monitoring resilience in individuals with Bipolar Disorder.
  • The RBD offers a valuable tool for clinical assessment and research in BD.
