Summary

Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Surgery
  • Patient Education
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Morcellation has gained significant media and professional attention.
  • Patient awareness and understanding of morcellation remain largely unexamined.
  • This study addresses the gap in knowledge regarding patient comprehension of morcellation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate patient knowledge of surgical morcellation.
  • To assess patient perceptions of morcellation's risks and benefits.
  • To determine how these perceptions influence surgical route decisions.

Main Methods:

  • Anonymous paper surveys administered to 500 patients at gynecologic appointments.
  • Questions assessed demographic information and knowledge of hysterectomy/myomectomy approaches.
  • Specific questions explored patient awareness of morcellation types, risks, and benefits.

Main Results:

  • A response rate of 79.2% (396/500) was achieved.
  • Only 8.3% of all patients had heard of morcellation.
  • Among those considering or having had hysterectomy/myomectomy, awareness was low (12.1% and 7.1%).
  • Of those aware, only 9.4% understood its definition; 4.0% would opt for abdominal surgery to avoid it.

Conclusions:

  • Patient knowledge regarding morcellation is extremely limited.
  • The majority of patients have never encountered information about morcellation.
  • Few patients would refuse morcellation or select an abdominal approach to avoid it.
