Psychoneuroimmunology: Cardiovascular Disease

615
Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is a multidisciplinary field that examines how psychological factors, particularly stress, interact with the immune system and impact physical health. Research in PNI has shown that chronic or traumatic stress can disrupt both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. These disruptions contribute to serious health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases.
A key area of focus in PNI is the relationship between stress and coronary...

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Cardiology
  • Psychosocial Health
  • Intervention Studies

Background:

  • Adolescents with cardiac diagnoses experience significant psychosocial distress.
  • Existing interventions may not fully address the unique needs of this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program versus a video online support group for adolescents with cardiac diagnoses.
  • To assess changes in anxiety, depression, illness-related stress, and coping skills.

Main Methods:

  • Randomized controlled trial with 46 adolescents (mean age 14.8 years).
  • Interventions included a 6-session MBSR program or a video online support group.
  • Pre- and post-intervention measures of psychological distress and coping; qualitative interviews.

Main Results:

  • Both MBSR and the video support group significantly decreased illness-related stress.
  • Greater use of coping skills correlated with lower depression post-intervention.
  • The MBSR group reported specific skill acquisition for distress management, while both groups valued social support.

Conclusions:

  • Both MBSR and video support groups are effective in reducing distress for adolescents with cardiac conditions.
  • MBSR offers additional benefits through structured stress management techniques.
  • Online support groups provide valuable social support and are accessible for those unable to meet in person.
