Summary

A single dental implant in the lower jaw significantly improves chewing ability for edentulous seniors. The timing of implant loading, whether immediate or delayed, did not affect chewing performance outcomes.

Background:

  • Elderly edentulous patients often experience reduced masticatory performance.
  • Implant-supported prostheses are a common solution for edentulism.
  • Optimal loading protocols for single implants in the mandible require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of a single midline mandibular implant on masticatory performance in edentulous seniors.
  • To compare the outcomes of direct versus conventional (delayed) loading protocols for this implant.

Main Methods:

  • A multi-centre randomized controlled trial involving 158 edentulous seniors (aged 60-89).
  • Participants were randomized into direct loading or conventional loading groups.
  • Masticatory performance was assessed at baseline, during healing, and at 1 and 4 months post-loading.

  • Masticatory performance significantly increased in both groups over time compared to baseline.
