Background:

Incidental affect's impact on attitude change is typically studied after dissonance induction.
This research examines the effect of incidental mood occurring *before* dissonance induction.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate how incidental mood influences attitude change when mood induction precedes dissonance.
To test if negative moods promote systematic processing and positive moods promote heuristic processing.

Main Methods:

Mood induction (negative, neutral, positive) followed by dissonance induction (low/high).
Participants wrote a counterattitudinal essay.
Attitude change and written productivity were measured.

Main Results:

Attitude change was absent in the negative incidental mood condition.
Written productivity, an indicator of cognitive resources, varied by mood.
Productivity predicted attitude change only in the high-dissonance group.

Conclusions:

Incidental mood prior to dissonance induction shapes information processing style.
This processing style, in turn, modulates the degree of attitude change observed.
