Fulminant amebic colitis
Diseases of the Colon and Rectum
|June 1, 1986
Abstract:
Nine patients with fulminating amebic colitis who were treated surgically from 1975 to 1982 are presented. Only those who had bowel resections with exteriorization of the cut ends survived. The pertinent literature is reviewed briefly.
Insights
Surgical intervention for severe amebic colitis requires bowel resection with exteriorization of cut ends for patient survival. This approach was critical for all survivors in a 1975-1982 study.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Surgical Pathology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Fulminating amebic colitis is a severe intestinal infection.
- Surgical management is often necessary for life-threatening cases.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate surgical outcomes in patients with severe amebic colitis.
- To identify critical surgical techniques for survival.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of nine patients with fulminating amebic colitis treated surgically between 1975 and 1982.
- Analysis of surgical procedures and patient outcomes.
- Review of relevant medical literature.
Main Results:
- All patients who underwent bowel resection with exteriorization of the cut ends survived.
- Patients not treated with this specific technique did not survive.
Conclusions:
- Bowel resection with exteriorization of cut ends is a vital surgical strategy for fulminating amebic colitis.
- This technique significantly improves survival rates in critical cases.
