Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Gait Analysis
  • Podiatry

Background:

  • The Footscan® platform system is a widely used clinical tool for measuring foot pressure.
  • Assessing the repeatability and normal parameter ranges of this system is crucial for accurate clinical application.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the repeatability of the Footscan® platform system.
  • To determine the normal range of foot loading parameters in healthy individuals.

Main Methods:

  • 32 healthy participants underwent two measurement sessions one week apart.
  • Key parameters including peak pressure (PP), contact time (CT), contact area (CA), pressure-time integral (PTI), and maximum force (MaF) were recorded across 10 foot zones.
  • Intra-session and inter-session repeatability were assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) and coefficients of variation (CVs).

Main Results:

  • The Footscan® system exhibited moderate to good repeatability, with CVs below 28% for all measured parameters.
  • Highest peak pressures were observed under the second and third metatarsals and the medial heel.
  • Contact time was predominantly under the metatarsal heads, while peak force was under the medial heel.

Conclusions:

  • The Footscan® platform system is a repeatable and valuable tool for assessing plantar pressure distribution.
  • The identified normal values provide a reliable reference range for gait analysis using the Footscan® system.
