Depression and anxiety in multiple system atrophy.
1Department of Neurology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China.
Depression and anxiety are highly prevalent in Chinese patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA). Female gender, longer disease duration, and disease severity are key determinants for these conditions in MSA patients.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Psychiatry
Background:
- Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is frequently associated with comorbid depression and anxiety.
- Understanding the prevalence and contributing factors of these psychological conditions in MSA is crucial for patient care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the incidence of depression and anxiety symptoms in Chinese patients diagnosed with MSA.
- To identify the key determinants associated with depression and anxiety in this patient cohort.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 237 Chinese patients with MSA was recruited for the study.
- Neuropsychological assessments were conducted using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-24 items and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale.
Main Results:
- High rates of depression (62.0%) and anxiety (71.7%) were observed in the studied MSA population.
- Depression severity correlated with lower education, longer disease duration, and greater disease severity.
- Anxiety severity was linked to longer disease duration, increased disease severity, and orthostatic hypotension.
- Female gender, extended disease duration, and severe disease were identified as significant determinants for both depression and anxiety via logistic regression.
Conclusions:
- Depression and anxiety symptoms are common in patients with multiple system atrophy.
- Neurologists must proactively screen for and manage depression and anxiety in MSA patients.
- Particular attention should be given to female patients, and those with longer disease duration or severe MSA conditions.
