Ethical Dilemmas I

2.1K
Ethical dilemmas in nursing are of utmost importance, as they often arise from the tension between adhering to core ethical principles and the practical realities of healthcare delivery. These dilemmas require nurses to navigate complex situations where competing ethical considerations pull them in different directions.
Let us explore some examples to understand the potentially complex moral decisions nurses face.

Nursing Ethical Principles II

2.3K
Ethical principles are essential in guiding nurses to fulfill their responsibilities, focusing on the quality of nursing care and decision-making. These principles, including autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice, and fidelity, shape the ethical framework within healthcare settings.
Consider the following scenario, which illustrates how these principles are applied in the care of Mr. John, a fifty-year-old teacher diagnosed with metastatic liver cancer.

Obedience

35.7K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Nursing Code of Ethics

5.1K
The Nursing Code of Ethics sets the ethical benchmark for the profession, and guides nurses in ethical analysis and decision making at the societal, organizational, and clinical levels. The code encompasses showing compassion and respect for the patient, their families, and communities in all circumstances while committing to providing patient-centered care. In addition, the code states that nurses must advocate for the patient by defending a cause or recommendation to protect their rights,...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Ethics
  • Nursing Education
  • End-of-Life Care

Background:

  • Euthanasia is a significant and debated issue in end-of-life care.
  • Understanding nursing students' attitudes is crucial due to their future clinical encounters.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the attitudes of Iranian nursing students towards euthanasia.
  • To identify potential misconceptions regarding euthanasia among this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted.
  • 382 Muslim nursing students participated using convenience sampling.
  • Data were collected via questionnaires assessing agreement with euthanasia on a Likert scale.

Main Results:

  • 61.5% of participants were female, with a mean age of 62.6 ± 14.1 years.
  • Attitudes towards euthanasia were negative (34.2%), neutral (41.6%), and positive (24%).
  • Students with clinical experience showed more agreement with active euthanasia.

Conclusions:

  • Misconceptions about euthanasia exist among Iranian Muslim nursing students.
  • Clinical experience appears to correlate with more positive attitudes towards euthanasia.
  • Further exploration into factors influencing nursing students' views on euthanasia is recommended.
