Shoulder and neck strength training did not significantly reduce tension-type headache (TTH) frequency or duration compared to ergonomic correction. Both groups showed some within-group improvements, but these did not reach clinical significance.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Physical Therapy
- Pain Management
Background:
- Neck pain is common in tension-type headache (TTH) sufferers.
- Strength training has previously shown benefits for neck pain.
- Investigating shoulder muscle strength training for TTH is warranted.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the impact of shoulder/neck muscle strength training on TTH frequency and duration.
- To compare strength training with ergonomic and posture correction for TTH management.
Main Methods:
- Sixty TTH patients were randomized into a 10-week strength training group or a control group.
- The strength training group used elastic resistance bands.
- The control group received ergonomic and posture correction advice.
Main Results:
- No significant difference in TTH outcomes was observed between the strength training and control groups.
- The strength training group experienced an 11% decrease in TTH frequency and 10% in duration.
- The control group showed a significant 24% reduction in TTH frequency and 27% in duration.
Conclusions:
- Strength training alone did not yield significant clinical benefits for TTH compared to ergonomic correction.
- Within-group improvements were noted but did not reach clinical significance.
- Multifaceted interventions combining various approaches may offer greater benefits for TTH and warrant further research.
