Cellulose and Pectic Polysaccharides01:15

Cellulose and Pectic Polysaccharides

5.1K
Every plant cell has a cell wall that protects the cell, provides structural support, and gives the cell shape. Cellulose, the main structural component of the plant cell wall, makes up over 30% of plant matter. It is the most abundant organic compound on earth.  Cellulose is an unbranched polysaccharide composed of linear chains of glucose molecules linked by β (1→4) glycosidic bonds.
As a cell matures, its cell wall specializes according to its type. For example, the...

Adaptations that Reduce Water Loss01:57

Adaptations that Reduce Water Loss

28.3K
Though evaporation from plant leaves drives transpiration, it also results in loss of water. Because water is critical for photosynthetic reactions and other cellular processes, evolutionary pressures on plants in different environments have driven the acquisition of adaptations that reduce water loss.

Background:

  • Ultraviolet (UV) radiation poses a threat to materials, causing degradation.
  • Effective UV absorbers are crucial for protecting textiles and other materials.
  • Triazine derivatives are known for their potential as UV-absorbing compounds.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and synthesize novel triazine-based UV absorbers.
  • To investigate the influence of substituents on electrochemical and spectral properties.
  • To evaluate the performance of synthesized compounds as UV absorbers on cotton fabric.

Main Methods:

  • Computational design and analysis of triazine derivatives.
  • Synthesis of UV absorbers via condensation reactions.
  • Characterization using UV-Vis, FT-IR, and MS techniques.
  • Assessment of UV absorption and fastness properties on cotton fabric via exhaust method.

Main Results:

  • Two triazine-based UV absorbers (1a and 2a) were successfully synthesized.
  • Computational studies indicated that electron-deficient units reduce LUMO levels and energy gap.
  • Synthesized compounds demonstrated good UV absorption and fastness properties on cotton fabric.

Conclusions:

  • The designed triazine-based compounds exhibit excellent potential as UV absorbers.
  • Substituent modification effectively tunes electrochemical and spectral properties.
  • The synthesized UV absorbers show promise for enhancing the durability of textiles against UV radiation.
