Summary

This 9-year follow-up of Charnley cemented hip arthroplasties shows excellent pain relief and functional improvement. Most patients experienced pain-free outcomes and reduced walking aid dependency after surgery.

Background:

  • Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common procedure for debilitating hip conditions.
  • Cemented arthroplasty remains a widely used technique, particularly with established designs like the Charnley prosthesis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term outcomes of Charnley cemented primary total hip arthroplasties.
  • To assess pain levels, functional status, and complication rates at a minimum 5-year follow-up.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study of 50 Charnley cemented primary THAs in 47 patients.
  • Preoperative and postoperative assessment including Harris hip score and radiographic evaluation.
  • Follow-up conducted over a 9-year period with a mean of 7 years.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvement in Harris hip score post-surgery.
  • 96% of patients were pain-free at follow-up.
  • Only 20% required walking support postoperatively, compared to 90% preoperatively.
  • Low complication rates: 4% dislocation, 2% deep infection, and 4-6% radiolucent zones. No deep vein thrombosis or heterotopic ossification.

Conclusions:

  • Charnley cemented primary total hip arthroplasty demonstrates durable, favorable long-term outcomes.
  • The procedure effectively alleviates pain and restores function in patients with severe hip disease.
  • Low rates of revision and serious complications support the continued use of this technique.
