Area of Science:

  • Plant genetics
  • Molecular biology
  • Agricultural science

Background:

  • Date palm breeding is complex due to long life cycles and heterozygous genetics.
  • Sexual propagation yields non-true-to-type plants, and sex is only identifiable at flowering.
  • Early sex determination in date palm seedlings is crucial for efficient breeding programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and highlight the application of molecular markers for sex identification in date palm seedlings.
  • To provide insights into utilizing genetic tools for date palm breeding.

Main Methods:

  • Utilizing random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers.
  • Employing sequence-characterized amplified regions (SCAR) markers.
  • Applying simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers for sex-linked loci identification.

Main Results:

  • Molecular markers (RAPD, SCAR, SSR) have demonstrated success in identifying sex-linked loci in date palms.
  • These markers enable the isolation of genes associated with sex determination.
  • The study confirms the utility of these markers for early gender identification.

Conclusions:

  • Molecular markers offer a reliable method for early sex determination in date palm seedlings.
  • This approach overcomes limitations of traditional breeding methods.
  • Facilitates efficient date palm breeding and genetic resource management.
