Background:

Attracting and retaining qualified nurses is vital for healthcare systems and patient safety globally.
The quality of the nursing practice environment significantly influences nurse retention and healthcare outcomes.
Understanding nurses' perceptions of their practice environment is essential for targeted improvements.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore Iranian nurses' perceptions of the essential components of their nursing practice environment.
To identify factors contributing to a positive or negative nursing practice environment from the nurses' perspective.

Main Methods:

A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews.
Twelve nurses were purposively selected from five teaching hospitals in Shiraz, Iran.
Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the collected data.

Main Results:

Two primary categories emerged: 'adequate staff' and 'adequacy of physical resources'.
'Adequate staff' included subcategories of balanced workload and well-qualified nurses.
'Adequacy of physical resources' encompassed equipment adequacy and appropriate physical structure.

Conclusions:

Imbalanced workloads, poor nurse-patient ratios, and inadequate physical resources negatively impact nurses' perceptions of their practice environment.
Findings offer baseline data for health policymakers to enhance nursing practice environments.
Improving the practice environment through adequate staffing and resources can resolve challenges and improve healthcare outcomes.
