Empathy02:34

Empathy

10.2K
Some researchers suggest that altruism operates on empathy. Empathy is the capacity to understand another person’s perspective, to feel what he or she feels. An empathetic person makes an emotional connection with others and feels compelled to help (Batson, 1991). Empathy can be expressed in several ways, including cognitive, affective, and motor.

8.2K
The history of therapeutic communication can be traced back to Florence Nightingale, who emphasized the importance of developing trusting relationships with patients. She taught that the presence of nurses with patients results in therapeutic healing.
Therapeutic communication is not the same as social interaction. Social interaction has no goal or purpose and consists of casual information sharing, whereas therapeutic communication has a plan or purpose for the conversation. Therapeutic...

Focusing involves centering a conversation on a message's critical elements or concepts. Focusing is valuable if the talk is vague or patients begin to repeat themselves. Sometimes, when patients are asked about their symptoms, they may go off-topic and try to tell their entire life story. Respectfully, the nurse should bring the conversation back into focus.
This therapeutic technique can also be used when a patient brings up pertinent information during a health-related conversation. The...

Therapeutic Communication

9.5K
Communication is a lifelong learning process. Through therapeutic communication, nurses can collect relevant assessment data, provide education and counseling, and interact during nursing interventions. Sending and receiving messages occur through verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and can happen separately or simultaneously.
Verbal communication depends on language or a prescribed way of using words so that people can share information effectively. The critical aspects of verbal...

Introspection01:29

Introspection

Introspection, long upheld as a reliable route to self-knowledge, involves examining one's thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. It underpins many psychological practices, from mindfulness meditation to psychotherapy and self-help strategies. However, empirical evidence challenges the accuracy of introspection as a means of understanding oneself.Limitations of Introspective InsightSeminal work by Nisbett and Wilson demonstrated that individuals are frequently unaware of the true causes...

The Scientific Method

66.2K
Research is what makes the difference between facts and opinions. Facts are observable realities, and opinions are personal judgments, conclusions, or attitudes that may or may not be accurate. In the scientific community, facts can be established only using evidence collected through empirical research.

Summary

Interpreters significantly impact empathic communication in doctor-patient consultations. Their renditions alter patients' empathic opportunities and doctors' empathic responses in approximately one-third of interactions.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Communication
  • Intercultural Communication
  • Linguistics

Background:

  • Empathic communication is crucial for effective healthcare.
  • Interpreter-mediated consultations present unique challenges to establishing rapport.
  • The role of interpreters in shaping empathic exchanges requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze how empathic communication is conveyed in interpreter-mediated medical consultations.
  • To determine the influence of interpreters on the expression and reception of empathy.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized the Empathic Communication Coding System (ECCS) to code 9 simulated consultations.
  • Compared patient-expressed empathy opportunities with interpreter renditions.
  • Analyzed doctor responses to empathic cues as presented by interpreters.

Main Results:

  • A match in empathic opportunities between patients and interpreters occurred in 44 out of 70 instances.
  • Interpreters' renditions led to 5 categories of shifts (e.g., reduced emotion, omitted emotion) in 26 instances.
  • These shifts altered the level and content of doctors' empathic responses.

Conclusions:

  • Interpreter renditions impact patient empathic opportunities and doctor responses in about one-third of interactions.
  • Training in intercultural communication and empathy should address the complexities of interpreter-mediated care.
  • Interpreters play a key role in the co-construction of empathy within consultations.
