This study examined personality disorders (PD) and psychopathology in Latinas with eating disorders (ED). Depressive personality traits were most common, and unlike previous research, no differences were found between binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa groups.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
- Eating Disorders Research
Background:
- Personality disorders (PD) and comorbidities significantly impact eating disorders (ED) treatment.
- Limited research exists on PD and psychopathology specifically within Latina populations experiencing ED.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a preliminary examination of personality pathology and comorbidities in a sample of Latina women diagnosed with ED.
- To identify prevalent PD traits and psychopathology in this understudied demographic.
- To compare PD and psychopathology prevalence between binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN) groups within the Latina sample.
Main Methods:
- Utilized the Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), Eating Disorders Examination, and Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III for personality assessment.
- Administered Beck Depression Inventory-II and Brief Symptom Inventory to evaluate psychological functioning.
- Analyzed data from 34 Latina women diagnosed with ED.
Main Results:
- Depressive personality traits were the most common (50% of the sample).
- Avoidant (41%) and depressive (65%) personalities were most common in BN and BED groups, respectively.
- Anxiety disorders were the most frequent psychiatric diagnoses; 52.9% had PD traits and other psychopathology.
- No significant differences in PD traits or psychopathology were observed between BED and BN groups.
Conclusions:
- Highlights the need for further research into PD and psychopathology in Latinas with ED.
- Findings differ from studies on White women, indicating unique patterns in this population.
- Recommends routine assessment of personality and psychological functioning in all ED patients, particularly in underrepresented groups, to improve treatment outcomes.
