    Summary

    Somatostatin (SRIF) administration in fowl marginally lowers thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). SRIF also appears to inhibit thyroid function by affecting peripheral T4 to T3 conversion.

    Background:

    • Thyroid hormones, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), are crucial for growth and metabolism in domestic fowl.
    • Somatostatin (SRIF) is a peptide hormone with diverse regulatory functions, including potential effects on the thyroid axis.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of somatostatin (SRIF) on plasma concentrations of T4 and T3 in immature domestic fowl.
    • To determine if SRIF influences the peripheral conversion of T4 to T3.

    Main Methods:

    • Immature domestic fowl were administered varying doses of SRIF (10-30 micrograms/kg).
    • Plasma T4 and T3 levels were measured at 10 and 60 minutes post-administration.
    • In some trials, anti-SRIF was administered prior to SRIF challenge to assess inhibitory effects.

    Main Results:

    • SRIF administration resulted in a marginal decrease (less than 25%) in plasma T4 and T3 concentrations.
    • Pre-administration of anti-SRIF augmented the inhibitory effect of SRIF on iodothyronine levels.
    • The reduction in T3 was proportionally greater than T4, leading to a decreased T3:T4 ratio.

    Conclusions:

    • Somatostatin (SRIF) inhibits thyroid function in fowl.
    • SRIF's inhibitory action may involve direct effects on the thyroid gland and/or modulation of peripheral T4 to T3 conversion.
