Summary

The 7-year survival rate for endodontically treated teeth (ETT) restored with fiber posts is 69.2%. More coronal structure and single crowns improve ETT survival, while less structure and fixed dental prostheses reduce it.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Prosthodontics

Background:

  • Endodontically treated teeth (ETT) often have compromised biomechanical integrity.
  • Restoration planning requires careful consideration of hard tissue loss and prosthetic type.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the 7-year clinical performance of ETT restored with fiber posts.
  • To assess the impact of prosthetic restoration type and residual coronal structure on ETT survival.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective clinical trial involving 120 ETT.
  • Groups: single unit crowns (SCs) vs. 3-4 unit fixed dental prostheses (FDPs).
  • Subgroups based on residual coronal structure: >50% (A) vs. <=50% (B).

Main Results:

  • Overall 7-year survival rate was 69.2%.
  • Highest survival (90%) in group 1A (SCs, >50% structure).
  • Lowest survival (56.7%) in group 2B (FDPs, <=50% structure).
  • Residual coronal structure and its interaction with restoration type significantly impacted survival.

Conclusions:

  • The amount of residual coronal structure is a critical factor for ETT survival.
  • The type of prosthetic restoration interacts with residual structure to influence long-term outcomes.
  • Optimizing restoration strategies based on remaining tooth structure is essential for ETT longevity.
