This study introduces a new mechanism for mobile Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) that improves handoff performance and reliability. The proposed solution ensures accurate handoff triggering and maintains high packet delivery rates in mobile industrial settings.
Area of Science:
- Industrial automation and control systems
- Wireless sensor networks
- Real-time communication systems
Background:
- Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs) are crucial for monitoring and control, but supporting mobile devices presents significant challenges.
- Existing research on mobile IWSNs is limited due to complex resource scheduling and rescheduling issues.
- Mobility support is essential for modern industrial production environments.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose and validate an effective mechanism for guaranteeing handoff performance in mobile IWSNs.
- To address the limitations of current approaches in handling device mobility within industrial wireless networks.
- To enhance the reliability and timeliness of communication for mobile devices in industrial settings.
Main Methods:
- Development of a mobility-aware scheme incorporating temporary connection and quick registration.
- Implementation and testing of the proposed mechanism in both a testbed and a real industrial environment.
- Comparative analysis against the WirelessHART standard and RSSI-based approaches.
Main Results:
- The proposed mechanism significantly improves the accuracy of handoff triggering.
- It effectively solves the ping-pong effect commonly observed during handoffs.
- Achieved an average end-to-end packet delivery rate of 98.5% in mobile IWSN scenarios.
- Facilitates real-time communication and enhances overall network reliability.
Conclusions:
- The developed mechanism provides a robust solution for handoff management in mobile IWSNs.
- It offers superior performance in terms of accuracy, reliability, and packet delivery compared to existing standards.
- The successful implementation in a real industrial environment demonstrates its practical applicability and effectiveness.
