Summary

Type 1 diabetes (T1DM) initially exaggerates the exercise pressor reflex in both male and female rats. However, in later stages, T1DM attenuates this reflex in males but not females.

Background:

  • Diabetic peripheral neuropathy impacts sensory nerves involved in reflexes.
  • The influence of type 1 diabetes (T1DM) on the exercise pressor reflex is not well understood.
  • Peripheral neuropathy in diabetes affects both myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of T1DM on the exercise pressor reflex.
  • To examine pressor and cardioaccelerator responses during hindlimb muscle contraction in T1DM rats.
  • To determine if these responses differ between early and late stages of T1DM and between sexes.

Main Methods:

  • Used decerebrate male and female rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced T1DM and healthy controls.
  • Induced diabetes via STZ injection (50 mg/kg).
  • Assessed pressor and heart rate responses to isometric hindlimb muscle contraction at 1, 3, and 6 weeks post-injection.

Main Results:

  • Early T1DM (1 and 3 weeks) showed an exaggerated pressor response in STZ rats compared to controls.
  • Late-stage T1DM (6 weeks) revealed an attenuated pressor and cardioaccelerator response in male STZ rats versus controls.
  • No significant attenuation of the reflex was observed in female STZ rats at 6 weeks.

Conclusions:

  • T1DM initially enhances the exercise pressor reflex in both sexes.
  • The reflex response to exercise is altered by T1DM duration and sex.
  • Late-stage T1DM differentially affects the exercise pressor reflex in male and female rats.
