Adding egg yolk lecithin to enteral formula improved diarrhea in patients and enhanced lipid absorption in rats. This emulsifier prevents formula breakdown in gastric acid, reducing patient burden.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Nutritional Science
- Biochemistry
Background:
- Diarrhea is a common complication during enteral nutrition.
- Egg yolk lecithin, an emulsifier, has shown promise in improving diarrhea associated with enteral formulas.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of enteral formula supplemented with egg yolk lecithin in improving diarrhea outcomes.
- To assess the in vitro emulsion stability and in vivo lipid absorption of egg yolk lecithin.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of patients receiving enteral formula with egg yolk lecithin.
- In vitro assessment of emulsifier stability in artificial gastric juice.
- In vivo studies in bile duct-ligated rats and a rat model of short bowel syndrome using different emulsifiers.
Main Results:
- 13/14 patients experienced improved stool consistency/frequency within 24 hours.
- Egg yolk lecithin maintained emulsion stability in gastric acid, unlike soy or synthetic emulsifiers.
- Enhanced lipid absorption and improved fecal consistency were observed in rat models with egg yolk lecithin.
Conclusions:
- Enteral formula emulsified with egg yolk lecithin promotes lipid absorption by protecting against gastric acid degradation.
- This formulation effectively improves diarrhea, potentially reducing patient and healthcare burdens.
