Summary

The gallbladder can be a safe alternative for inferior vena cava reconstruction in dogs. This animal study showed excellent graft patency and healing, suggesting potential for human application.

Background:

  • Inferior vena cava (IVC) reconstruction presents surgical challenges.
  • Autologous tissues are explored for vascular graft applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of using the gallbladder as a graft for IVC reconstruction.
  • To assess the safety and functionality of gallbladder patches in a canine model.

Main Methods:

  • An experimental study was performed on 5 dogs.
  • An oval window defect was created in the IVC and repaired with an autologous gallbladder patch.
  • Graft patency and function were assessed macroscopically and microscopically at 2 months.

Main Results:

  • All IVC repairs demonstrated excellent macroscopic patency at 2 months.
  • Microscopic examination revealed complete endothelialization of all gallbladder patches.
  • No signs of infection, inflammation, or thrombosis were observed.

Conclusions:

  • The autologous gallbladder patch is a viable and safe option for IVC reconstruction in this canine model.
  • Further prospective studies are warranted to validate these findings for clinical use.
