    Summary

    This study describes osteosarcomas in mice, noting retained bone formation and lung metastasis in transplanted tumors. Tumor growth accelerated with passaging, but overall transplantability did not increase.

    Background:

    • Osteosarcomas are primary bone cancers.
    • Spontaneous tumor occurrence varies between mouse strains.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To characterize osteosarcomas in NZBR/BI mice.
    • To investigate tumor behavior after serial transplantation.

    • Osteosarcomas from untreated and paraffin-treated NZBR/BI mice were analyzed.
    • Tumor tissue was serially transplanted into syngeneic mice.
    • Tumor growth, histology, and metastatic potential were assessed.

    • Transplanted osteosarcomas retained the ability to form bone.
    • A propensity for lung metastasis was observed.
    • The latent period for tumor formation decreased with successive passages, but transplantability did not enhance.

    • Serial passage influences tumor latency but not inherent transplantability.
    • Further research is needed to compare osteosarcoma incidence across mouse strains.
