Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Health Services Research
  • Medical Ethics

Background:

  • Lack of knowledge is a primary barrier to Advance Care Planning (ACP) completion.
  • Understanding current knowledge levels is crucial for improving ACP uptake.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review existing literature on knowledge regarding Advance Care Planning.
  • To identify gaps and inconsistencies in the assessment of ACP knowledge.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search across major databases (CINHAL, AgeLine, PubMed, PsyINFO, SocINDEX) from 1994 to May 2016.
  • Inclusion of 37 articles: 35 quantitative, 1 qualitative, 1 mixed-methods.
  • Analysis focused on studies conducted primarily in the US, involving professionals.

Main Results:

  • Studies examined both subjective and objective knowledge of ACP.
  • Seventeen studies indicated partial knowledge, with participants aware of some aspects but not others.
  • Significant inconsistencies were noted in assessment instruments and item counts.

Conclusions:

  • Increased efforts are needed to enhance ACP knowledge among both healthcare professionals and lay individuals.
  • Development of validated tools for measuring objective and subjective ACP knowledge is recommended as a priority.
