Distribution and Dispersion00:54

Distribution and Dispersion

25.7K
To understand intra-specific interactions in populations, scientists measure the spatial arrangement of species individuals. This geographic arrangement is known as the species distribution or dispersion. Highly territorial species exhibit a uniform distribution pattern, in which individuals are spaced at relatively equal distances from one another. Species that are highly tied to particular resources, such as food or shelter, tend to concentrate around those resources, and thus exhibit a...

Diffusion01:12

Diffusion

223.3K
Diffusion is the passive movement of substances down their concentration gradients—requiring no expenditure of cellular energy. Substances, such as molecules or ions, diffuse from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration in the cytosol or across membranes. Eventually, the concentration will even out, with the substance moving randomly but causing no net change in concentration. Such a state is called dynamic equilibrium, which is essential for maintaining overall...

Frequency-dependent Selection01:21

Frequency-dependent Selection

24.3K
When the fitness of a trait is influenced by how common it is (i.e., its frequency) relative to different traits within a population, this is referred to as frequency-dependent selection. Frequency-dependent selection may occur between species or within a single species. This type of selection can either be positive—with more common phenotypes having higher fitness—or negative, with rarer phenotypes conferring increased fitness.

Bioavailability Study Design: Single Versus Multiple Dose Studies

283
Bioavailability studies are essential for understanding how a drug is absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted in the body. These studies assess the extent and rate at which the active pharmaceutical agent becomes available at the site of action. The design of bioavailability studies can involve single-dose or multiple-dose regimens, each with distinct advantages and limitations.Single-dose studies are the preferred approach due to their simplicity and reduced drug exposure for...

Production Efficiency01:01

Production Efficiency

18.8K
Net production efficiency (NPE) is the efficiency at which organisms assimilate energy into biomass for the next trophic level. Due to low metabolic rates and less energy spent on thermoregulatory processes, the NPE of ectotherms (cold-blooded animals) is 10 times higher than endotherms (warm-blooded animals).

Feedback Inhibition00:46

Feedback Inhibition

57.6K
Biochemical reactions are occurring constantly in cells, converting starting substances to different products, usually with the help of enzymes that speed the reactions. Without enzymes, it would take far too long for most reactions to occur to be useful to the cell!

Area of Science:

  • Scholarly communication
  • Bibliometrics
  • Digital publishing

Background:

  • Mendeley saves correlate with future citations.
  • Evidence-based strategies to increase Mendeley saves are lacking.
  • Online reference manager usage is increasing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of the TrendMD cross-publisher distribution channel on Mendeley article saves.
  • To determine if promoting article links via TrendMD increases scholarly article discoverability.
  • To provide evidence for effective scholarly article promotion strategies.

Main Methods:

  • A 4-week randomized controlled trial was conducted.
  • 400 articles from the Journal of Medical Internet Research were randomized into two groups: TrendMD promotion (n=200) and control (n=200).
  • Mendeley saves were compared between the TrendMD and control groups.

Main Results:

  • Articles promoted via TrendMD showed a 77% increase in Mendeley saves compared to the control group.
  • The mean difference in Mendeley saves was 2.7 (95% CI [2.63, 2.77]), which was statistically significant (p < 0.01).
  • A positive correlation (Spearman's rho r=0.60) was observed between TrendMD pageviews and Mendeley saves.

Conclusions:

  • This is the first randomized controlled trial demonstrating that TrendMD enhances Mendeley saves.
  • Cross-publisher article recommendations via TrendMD may serve as an effective strategy to increase scholarly article visibility.
  • Further research and replication are needed, but findings suggest TrendMD can enhance article citations.
