    Background:

    • Essential hypertension is a widespread cardiovascular condition.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of carvedilol in treating essential hypertension.
    • To assess the effects of carvedilol on 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate.
    • To investigate the impact of carvedilol on cardiac function during exercise.

    Main Methods:

    • A 4-week open-label clinical trial involving 12 patients with essential hypertension.
    • Patients received carvedilol, starting at 25 mg twice daily, with potential dose escalation to 50 mg twice daily.
    • Ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate monitoring, exercise testing, and radionuclide ventriculography were performed.

    Main Results:

    • Carvedilol significantly reduced mean daytime systolic and diastolic blood pressure (25/19 mm Hg) and heart rate (22 beats/min).

    • Its vasodilating properties may offer advantages for left ventricular function compared to traditional beta-blockers.
    • Carvedilol is a potential first-line therapeutic agent for managing essential hypertension.
