This study developed and delivered shared decision-making (SDM) training for mental health medication management. The pilot training was feasible and well-received by service users, care coordinators, and psychiatrists.
Area of Science:
- Mental Health
- Clinical Psychology
- Healthcare Management
Background:
- Shared decision-making (SDM) is crucial for patient-centered care but its implementation in clinical practice is slow.
- There is a need to enhance the adoption of SDM, particularly in medication management within mental health services.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the development and delivery of a training intervention for SDM in mental health medication management.
- To evaluate the feedback from key stakeholders who participated in the training.
Main Methods:
- The Shared Involvement in Medication Management Education (ShIMME) project developed and delivered SDM training.
- Three stakeholder groups (service users, care coordinators, psychiatrists) received the training.
- Participant feedback was collected and evaluated.
Main Results:
- The training intervention was mostly well-received by all participating stakeholder groups.
- Interaction among peers was identified as the most valued aspect of the training program.
- The pilot demonstrated the feasibility of delivering SDM training to diverse mental health stakeholders.
Conclusions:
- Delivering shared decision-making training to multiple stakeholder groups in mental health medication management is feasible.
- Further large-scale studies are necessary to determine the effectiveness of this training intervention.
