Diversity of Protists I01:15

Diversity of Protists I

1.5K
Excavata is a diverse group of protists that includes both chemoorganotrophic and phototrophic species, with some thriving in anaerobic environments. Among the key groups within Excavata are diplomonads and parabasalids, which are flagellated protists that lack mitochondria and chloroplasts. These microorganisms typically inhabit anoxic environments, such as the intestines of animals, where they exist either symbiotically or as parasites, relying on fermentation for energy production. Some...

Alveolates are a group of organisms recognized by the presence of alveoli, which are cytoplasmic sacs located beneath the cell membrane. While their function remains uncertain, alveoli may help regulate water balance by controlling how much water enters and leaves the cell. In dinoflagellates, these structures may serve as armor plates. There are three major types of alveolates: ciliates, which move using cilia; dinoflagellates, which use flagella for movement; and apicomplexans, which are...

Phylogeny01:23

Phylogeny

63.4K
Phylogeny is concerned with the evolutionary diversification of organisms or groups of organisms. A group of organisms with a name is called a taxon (singular). Taxa (plural) can span different levels of the evolutionary hierarchy. For instance, the group containing all birds is a taxon (comprising the class Aves), and the group of all species of daisies (the genus Bellis) is a taxon. Phylogenies can likewise include just one genus (i.e., depict species relationships) or span an entire kingdom.

Fungal Phylum Microsporidia

606
Microsporidia are a group of obligate intracellular fungi that were initially classified as protists but were later reclassified based on phylogenetic, molecular, and structural evidence linking them to the Chytridiomycota. These unicellular, non-motile organisms are highly specialized parasites that infect a wide range of animal hosts, including humans. They have evolved extensive genomic and metabolic reductions, making them highly dependent on their hosts for survival.Morphology and Genomic...

Diversity of Archaea II

582
Archaea, one of the three domains of life, exhibit remarkable diversity and adaptability, thriving in both extreme and moderate environments. Historically, most identified archaea have been classified into two major phyla: Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota. However, recent molecular studies have expanded this classification to include three additional phyla: Thaumarchaeota, Nanoarchaeota, and Korarchaeota, each exhibiting unique characteristics and ecological roles.Thaumarchaeota: Mesophiles...

Rhizaria are a diverse group of unicellular protists characterized by their threadlike cytoplasmic extensions known as pseudopodia. These structures aid in both locomotion and feeding, giving Rhizaria an amoeboid appearance. Their amoeboid morphology once led to taxonomic confusion, but molecular phylogenetics has clarified their evolutionary placement and emphasized their shared use of pseudopodia despite divergent lineages. This clade comprises diverse lineages such as Chlorarachniophyta,...

Area of Science:

  • Mycology
  • Fungal Taxonomy
  • Phylogenetics

Background:

  • The species diversity within the fungal genus Diaporthe (syn. Phomopsis) remains poorly understood.
  • Previous taxonomic studies have highlighted limitations in current knowledge regarding Diaporthe species.
  • The genus is known to cause significant plant diseases globally.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and clarify the species diversity of Diaporthe (Phomopsis) using molecular data.
  • To re-evaluate the taxonomic status of previously described Phomopsis species from China.
  • To assess the phylogenetic placement of Diaporthe and related genera.

Main Methods:

  • DNA sequence analysis of multi-locus phylogenetic markers (LSU, ITS, and TEF1) was performed.
  • Morphological characteristics were analyzed alongside molecular data for species delineation.
  • Phylogenetic analyses were conducted on 49 strains from various global locations.

Main Results:

  • Eight new species of Diaporthe are described based on distinct lineages and morphologies.
  • Twelve previously described Phomopsis species from China were confirmed to be within the Diaporthe genus.
  • Phylogenetic analyses demonstrate that Diaporthe is paraphyletic, with several distinct genera embedded within it.

Conclusions:

  • The study significantly contributes to the understanding of Diaporthe species diversity and its taxonomic complexity.
  • The paraphyletic nature of Diaporthe, with nested genera, suggests complex evolutionary patterns.
  • Further research, including additional collections and phylogenetic data, is required before reclassifying Diaporthe into smaller monophyletic genera.
