Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System I: Health History01:21

Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System I: Health History

486
The genitourinary system is critical to maintaining fluid balance, waste elimination, and reproductive function. Nurses play a vital role in assessing this system, beginning with a thorough health history. This process involves gathering patient information, identifying risk factors, and recognizing symptoms of genitourinary disorders. Early detection is vital for timely interventions and management.1. Gathering Patient InformationA complete health history includes the patient’s personal,...

Disorders of the Urinary System

1.4K
The urinary system is responsible for eliminating waste and excess fluids from the body. However, disorders of the urinary system can arise due to various reasons like infections, stress, age, congenital abnormalities, and lifestyle.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common urinary system disorders. They are caused by bacteria that enter the urethra and can spread to the bladder resulting in cystitis. Pyelonephritis is the result of a UTI that has ascended to the level of the...

Anatomy of the Genitourinary System II: Bladder and Urethra

2.0K
The lower urinary system consists of the urinary bladder and urethra, which are essential in storing and expelling urine from the body. Together with the internal and external sphincters, these structures work together to regulate urination effectively.Anatomy of the BladderThe urinary bladder is a muscular, stretchable organ behind the pubic bone and in front of the rectum. In females, the bladder is positioned anterior to the vagina and inferior to the uterus, while in males, it is located...

Disorders of the Female Reproductive System

4.6K
The female reproductive system can be affected by several disorders, including Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), endometriosis, and various forms of cancer. PMS and PMDD are cyclical conditions that cause physical and emotional distress, with symptoms that include edema, mood swings, and food cravings. PMDD is a more severe form of PMS characterized by increased symptom severity that peaks during the luteal phase and tends to improve or resolve shortly after...

Urinary Tract Infection II: Pathophysiology

862
The pathophysiology of urinary tract infections (UTIs) encompasses several progressive stages, beginning with bacterial colonization and culminating in potential systemic complications if untreated. UTIs are primarily initiated by bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, which often originate from the gastrointestinal tract and migrate to the urinary system through the periurethral area. This migration can occur via several routes, including improper hygiene practices, sexual activity, or...

Urinary Tract Infection IV: Nursing Management

527
In managing urinary tract infections (UTIs) in nursing, a comprehensive assessment is essential. Begin by gathering subjective data, such as the patient’s complaints of dysuria (painful urination), urinary frequency, urgency, suprapubic pain, and any lower abdominal discomfort. This information can be complemented by questions regarding previous UTIs, sexual activity, and personal hygiene practices, which can provide insight into risk factors. Objective assessment should focus on signs...

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Sexual Medicine
  • Women's Health

Background:

  • Urinary incontinence (UI) and female sexual dysfunction (FSD) are prevalent conditions impacting women's quality of life.
  • These conditions are frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between UI and FSD.
  • To consider incontinence type and psychosocial/physiologic factors in sexual function.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search of PubMed and bibliographic reviews was conducted.
  • 26 studies published between 1979 and 2016 were included in the analysis.

Main Results:

  • UI is associated with increased rates and severity of FSD.
  • Coital UI affects 24-66% of women with UI, leading to fear, avoidance, and decreased satisfaction.
  • Mixed UI shows a stronger association with FSD compared to urgency or stress UI.

Conclusions:

  • Concurrent screening for UI and FSD in women is advisable.
  • Further research is needed to standardize FSD measurements and clarify the relationship with UI.
