Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of surgical correction on amblyopia and suppression in congenital cyclovertical strabismus.
  • To assess visual performance changes following surgery for superior oblique palsy.

Main Methods:

  • Microperimetry was used to assess fixation patterns before and after surgery in 10 children.
  • Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and stereopsis were measured pre- and post-operatively.
  • No concurrent amblyopia treatments were administered.

Main Results:

  • Surgical correction of excyclodeviation improved monocular BCVA and fixation in the amblyopic eye.
  • Binocular stereopsis improved or emerged post-surgery.
  • Suppression resolved, as indicated by the Worth four-dot test.

Conclusions:

  • Amblyopia associated with congenital superior oblique palsy can resolve rapidly after surgical alignment.
  • In the absence of other contributing factors, this amblyopia may be termed 'pseudoamblyopia'.
