Continuing Care01:25

Continuing Care

2.0K
Continuing care describes the variety of health, personal, and social services provided over a prolonged period. The need for continuing care is increasing because people are living longer. Many people do not have families or others to care for them. Continuing care is mainly for patients who are disabled, functionally dependent, or suffering from a terminal disease. It is available within institutional settings or in homes. Examples include nursing centers or facilities, assisted living,...

Patient-centered Care01:13

Patient-centered Care

3.1K
Patient-centered care involves delivering care beyond inpatient hospitalization. Reflective practice can enhance a patient-centered approach. Reflective practice is a process of reasoning that considers all aspects of the present situation, including practicalities, learning from personal practice, and consideration of patient needs. Patients appreciate care decisions made while considering their input. Involving the patient in their care provides the patient with a sense of contribution rather...

Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System

4.2K
At the different levels of the healthcare system, we see varying methods of healthcare used. These methods include managed care systems, case management, and primary healthcare.
Managed Care System:
The managed care system is designed to control the cost while maintaining the quality of care. The patient's care from admission to discharge is planned by the primary care provider or the case manager, also known as the gatekeeper. In a managed care system, the number of care providers is...

Issues And Trends In Healthcare Delivery System

6.3K
The issues and trends in healthcare delivery are constantly changing. The COVID-19 pandemic is one recent issue that wreaked havoc on healthcare systems, causing a shortage of healthcare workers, high demand for medicines and supplies, and increased medical expenditure due to a lack of insurance. Other issues include rising healthcare costs and care fragmentation.
Cost Containment
Payment for healthcare services has historically promoted adoption of costly and often unnecessary or inefficient...

Area of Science:

  • Palliative Care
  • Digital Health
  • Service Design

Background:

  • Access to hospice services is challenged by an aging population and limited resources.
  • Virtual Hospice models are emerging to address these access barriers.
  • Highland Hospice serves a remote and rural population in Scotland, UK, facing unique service delivery challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present early-stage design work for a Virtual Hospice at Highland Hospice.
  • To improve access to hospice services for a remote and rural population.
  • To develop actionable design principles for Virtual Hospice development.

Main Methods:

  • A participatory design approach using Experience Labs with staff, healthcare professionals, and patients.
  • Qualitative thematic analysis and design analysis of data from Experience Labs.
  • Piloting of developed design principles with stakeholders for feedback.

Main Results:

  • Identification of key themes and barriers to accessing Highland Hospice services.
  • Development of an initial set of seven design principles to guide Virtual Hospice development.
  • Positive feedback on the design principles from a stakeholder pilot group.

Conclusions:

  • The design principles aim to guide the ongoing development of the Highland Hospice Virtual Hospice.
  • The challenges faced by Highland Hospice are not unique to their setting.
  • The developed design principles and approach are applicable to other UK and international hospices.
