    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology and Immunology
    • Vascular Inflammation and Autoimmunity

    Background:

    • Takayasu arteritis is a rare large vessel vasculitis.
    • Crescentic glomerulonephritis indicates severe kidney damage.
    • The co-occurrence of these conditions is exceptionally rare.

    Observation:

    • A 16-year-old female presented with aortitis and rapidly progressive renal failure.
    • Renal biopsy confirmed crescentic glomerulonephritis.
    • Aortography revealed segmental occlusions in the aorta and iliac arteries.

    Findings:

    • Initial pulse prednisolone therapy led to marked improvement in renal function and arterial occlusions.
    • However, after 34 months, glomerulonephritis and aortitis recurred.
    • This case highlights the association between Takayasu arteritis and crescentic glomerulonephritis.

    Implications:

    • The study documents a rare association between Takayasu arteritis and crescentic glomerulonephritis.
    • It demonstrates a significant, albeit incomplete, initial response to pulse steroid therapy.
    • This case underscores the need for long-term monitoring in patients with Takayasu arteritis and renal involvement.
