Young adults often engage in drunkorexia, limiting calorie intake before binge drinking. This behavior correlates with substance use, highlighting a need for awareness and intervention.
Area of Science:
- Behavioral Science
- Public Health
- Nutritional Psychiatry
Background:
- Existing research indicates a link between alcohol consumption and poor dietary choices.
- Young adults may adopt extreme weight control methods to offset planned binge drinking episodes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence of drunkorexia among young adults in Italy.
- To explore the association between drunkorexic behaviors, binge drinking, and psychoactive substance use.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional survey administered to 4275 healthy Italian adults aged 18–26.
- Data collected on socio-demographics, binge drinking patterns, abnormal eating behaviors, and substance use.
- Statistical analysis to identify correlations between variables.
Main Results:
- 34.1% of participants reported restricting calorie intake prior to alcohol consumption.
- Significant positive correlations were observed between drunkorexic attitudes and binge drinking (p < .01).
- Drunkorexia was also significantly associated with the use of cocaine (p < .01) and Novel Psychoactive Substances (p < .01).
Conclusions:
- Drunkorexia is a prevalent behavior among young Italian adults.
- The findings underscore the co-occurrence of drunkorexia with binge drinking and substance abuse.
- Increased awareness of drunkorexia is crucial for healthcare providers to address its health implications.
