Morgagni hernia, a rare congenital diaphragmatic hernia, often presents subtly in adults. This case highlights successful laparoscopic repair, improving lung function in a patient with a long-undiagnosed massive hernia.
Area of Science:
- Thoracic Surgery
- Gastroenterology
- Pediatric Surgery
Background:
- Morgagni hernia is the rarest congenital diaphragmatic hernia (2-3%).
- Adult presentation is often non-specific, but severe cases cause shortness of breath and restrictive lung patterns.
Observation:
- A rare case of a massive, long-undiagnosed right-sided Morgagni hernia is presented.
- The patient experienced symptoms including shortness of breath and reduced lung function.
Findings:
- Laparoscopic transabdominal repair was successfully performed.
- Postoperative lung expansion improved, leading to better lung function and blood gas analysis.
Implications:
- Laparoscopic repair is a favored approach for adult Morgagni hernias, especially non-acute cases.
- Early diagnosis and surgical intervention can significantly improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
