Summary

Ultrasonography revealed joint abnormalities in over 30% of children newly diagnosed with celiac disease. These subclinical synovitis findings significantly decreased in children adhering to a gluten-free diet for over six months.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate early joint involvement using ultrasonography in children with newly diagnosed celiac disease.
  • To compare joint abnormalities in newly diagnosed celiac patients versus those on a gluten-free diet (GFD) for over six months.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional comparative study design was employed.
  • Joint abnormalities were assessed using high-resolution ultrasonography.
  • Two groups of children with celiac disease were evaluated: newly diagnosed and those on a GFD for >6 months.

Main Results:

  • Ultrasonography detected joint abnormalities in 19 out of 60 (31.7%) children with newly diagnosed celiac disease.
  • In contrast, only 2 out of 60 (3.3%) children on a GFD for over six months exhibited abnormalities.
  • This indicates a significant reduction in ultrasonographic joint findings with adherence to a GFD.

Conclusions:

  • Subclinical synovitis, detectable by ultrasound, is a common finding in children newly diagnosed with celiac disease.
  • Gluten-free diet adherence appears to resolve or reduce ultrasonographically detected joint abnormalities.
  • Ultrasonography may serve as a valuable tool for assessing joint involvement in pediatric celiac disease.
