    Summary

This study found that L-dopa challenge can predict relapse in schizophrenia patients. Patients showing an increase in Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale scores after L-dopa were more likely to relapse sooner.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Neuroscience
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Neuroleptic medication is effective in maintaining remission for schizophrenia.
    • However, some patients relapse after neuroleptic withdrawal, while others maintain remission without medication.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To predict relapse time in schizophrenia patients after neuroleptic withdrawal.
    • To assess the utility of L-dopa challenge as a predictor of relapse.

    Main Methods:

    • 28 schizophrenia patients were withdrawn from neuroleptics.
    • Patients underwent a 7-day L-dopa challenge.
    • Time to relapse was monitored after the challenge.

    Main Results:

    • Time to relapse significantly correlated with L-dopa-induced increase in Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) scores (p = .006).

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Five of six patients who responded to L-dopa relapsed within 4 weeks.
  • Only four of 22 non-responders relapsed in the same period.
  • Conclusions:

    • L-dopa challenge can predict relapse in schizophrenia.
    • Increased BPRS scores after L-dopa indicate a higher risk of early relapse.
    • This finding may inform personalized treatment strategies for schizophrenia patients.
