Background:

  • Bipolar Disorder (BD) is frequently comorbid with binge eating (BE) behavior and BE disorder.
  • While clinical associations are known, psychological dimensions and eating habits in BD require further investigation.
  • Research in a French cohort explored BE prevalence and its links to BD characteristics, anxiety, impulsivity, emotional regulation, and eating habits.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of binge eating behavior in a French cohort of Bipolar Disorder patients.
  • To identify psychological and clinical factors associated with binge eating in Bipolar Disorder.
  • To explore the relationship between emotional regulation, anxiety, impulsivity, and eating habits in BD.

Main Methods:

  • 145 outpatients with Bipolar Disorder (I and II) were assessed for BE behavior using the Binge Eating Scale (BES).
  • Univariate analyses identified differentiating characteristics between BD patients with and without BE behavior.
  • Backward stepwise logistic regression (BSLR) was employed for multivariate analysis.

Main Results:

  • 18.6% of Bipolar Disorder patients in the sample met criteria for binge eating behavior.
  • Multivariate analysis revealed shorter BD duration, higher anxiety, and greater emotional reactivity were associated with BE behavior in BD.
  • These factors differentiated BD patients with BE behavior from those without.

Conclusions:

  • Binge eating behavior is prevalent in both females and males with Bipolar Disorder.
  • Emotional dysregulation and anxiety appear to be significant shared vulnerability factors.
  • These factors may contribute to worse outcomes in BD and an increased likelihood of binge eating behavior.
