    Summary

    The prevalence of periapical inflammatory lesions (PEIR) in children is similar between Australia and Saudi Arabia. Children with PEIR experience a significant delay in dental development, with impaction being more common.

    Background:

    • Periapical inflammatory lesions (PEIR) are common in primary teeth.
    • Understanding PEIR prevalence and its impact on dental development is crucial for early intervention.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the prevalence of PEIR in Australian and Saudi Arabian children.
    • To investigate the association between PEIR and dental development in children.

    Main Methods:

    • Panoramic radiographs of 842 Australian and 456 Saudi children were analyzed for PEIR.
    • Dental age was assessed using the Demirjian method for children with and without PEIR.

    Main Results:

    • No significant difference in PEIR prevalence was found between Australian (2%) and Saudi (0.6%) children.
    • Mandibular second molars and premolars were most frequently affected by PEIR.
    • Dental impaction occurred in 31% of teeth with PEIR versus 0.1% in controls (p<0.0001).
    • Children with PEIR exhibited a mean dental development delay of 0.54 years (p<0.0001).

    Conclusions:

    • PEIR prevalence is comparable between Australian and Saudi pediatric populations.
    • PEIR is significantly associated with delayed dental development in children.
    • Early detection and management of PEIR may be important for normal dental maturation.
