Summary

This study establishes age-specific cutoff values for low skeletal muscle mass in healthy adults using CT scans. These new reference points, based on psoas muscle index, can aid in identifying sarcopenia risk in aging populations.

Background:

  • Previous low skeletal muscle mass cutoffs were primarily for cancer patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine simple, age-specific cutoff values for low skeletal muscle mass using computed tomography (CT) in healthy adults.
  • To establish reference ranges for psoas muscle index (PMI) across different age groups and sexes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 1,422 healthy adults undergoing health screening.
  • Measurement of psoas muscle cross-sectional area at the L3 vertebra on CT, adjusted for height (PMI).
  • Calculation of cutoff values as 2 standard deviations below the mean PMI for age- and sex-specific groups.

Main Results:

  • Mean PMI was 896.60 mm²/m² for men and 570.54 mm²/m² for women.
