Background:

  • Lumbosacral and coccygeal skin-covered appendages, often termed human-tails, represent rare congenital malformations.
  • These appendages can be associated with significant underlying spinal abnormalities.

Observation:

  • A full-term newborn presented with a lumbar skin appendage and a normal neurological examination.
  • Spinal magnetic resonance imaging revealed a dermal sinus extending from the appendage into the spinal canal.

Findings:

  • Surgical intervention on the third day of life involved ligation of the dermal sinus and removal of the appendage.
  • The infant maintained a normal neurological examination at 12 months post-surgery.

Implications:

  • Lumbar skin appendages, though rare, warrant comprehensive investigation for associated spinal dysraphism.
  • Early surgical management and long-term surveillance are crucial for patients with these malformations.
