Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Head and Neck Surgery

Background:

  • Canalicular adenoma (CA) is a rare, benign salivary gland neoplasm.
  • It represents less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors and is the third most common benign tumor of minor salivary glands.
  • Understanding CA trends is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review reported cases of Canalicular Adenoma (CA).
  • To identify trends in CA presentation, diagnostic features, treatment modalities, and patient outcomes.
  • To provide insights into the epidemiology and clinical behavior of CA.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of databases for reported CA cases.
  • Data extraction included patient symptoms, tumor location, histopathology, demographics, treatment, follow-up, and recurrence.
  • Analysis of 430 identified cases.

Main Results:

  • The upper lip was the most common location (66.3%), followed by the hard palate (14.5%).
  • Nodules were the most frequent presentation (46.5%), with many cases being asymptomatic (29.5%) or causing discomfort (28.7%).
  • CA predominantly affected females (64%) with an average age of 66.3 years; 97% underwent surgery with a 3% recurrence rate over a mean follow-up of 136.3 months.

Conclusions:

  • Canalicular adenoma exhibits a significant predilection for the upper lip.
  • While often asymptomatic, pressure is a primary symptom.
  • Surgical intervention is highly effective with minimal recurrence.
