Mandibular prognathism with chin deviation is linked to nasal deviation. Surgery for mandibular prognathism may alter alar base angle but not nasal tip asymmetry, requiring patient counseling.
Area of Science:
- Orthodontics and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Craniofacial Anatomy
- Skeletal Malocclusion Research
Background:
- Asymmetric mandibular prognathism can affect facial aesthetics.
- Nasal deviation is a potential consequence of mandibular asymmetry.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate nasal deviation in patients with asymmetric mandibular prognathism.
- To assess the impact of isolated mandibular surgery on nasal structures.
Main Methods:
- A cohort of 35 patients with skeletal class III malocclusion was studied.
- Patients were divided into asymmetry (n=20) and control (n=15) groups based on menton deviation (>4mm).
- Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was used for pre- and postoperative evaluation of mandibular asymmetry and nasal parameters.
Main Results:
- Nasal tip significantly shifted towards the deviated mandible in the asymmetry group (1.5±0.9 degrees, P<0.01).
- Alar base angle (ABA) was narrower on the non-deviated side in the asymmetry group.
- Isolated mandibular surgery altered ABA but not nasal tip position or columella base.
Conclusions:
- Mandibular deviation is associated with nasal deviation.
- Isolated mandibular surgery impacts alar base but not nasal tip asymmetry.
- Preoperative patient counseling regarding limitations of mandibular surgery for nasal asymmetry is crucial.

Cranial Bones: Lateral View
The temporal bone forms the lower lateral side of the skull. The temporal bone is subdivided into several regions. The flattened upper portion is the squamous portion of the temporal bone. Below this area and projecting anteriorly is the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, which forms the posterior portion of the zygomatic arch. Posteriorly is the mastoid portion of the temporal bone. Projecting...
