Area of Science:

  • General Practice
  • Healthcare Workforce Sustainability
  • Medical Education

Background:

  • Increasing burnout, stress, and job dissatisfaction among General Practitioners (GPs) threaten healthcare workforce sustainability.
  • A projected shortage of GPs necessitates strategies to enhance workforce well-being and retention.
  • Promoting GP resilience is crucial for maintaining high-quality patient care and a stable healthcare system.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore General Practitioners' (GPs) perspectives on resilience training content, context, and acceptability.
  • To inform the development of more effective resilience programs tailored to the needs of GPs.
  • To identify barriers and facilitators for GP engagement in resilience training.

Main Methods:

  • Qualitative study design involving General Practitioners (GPs) currently practicing in England.
  • Data collection through two focus groups (n=15) and one-to-one telephone interviews (n=7).
  • Semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis were employed to analyze qualitative data.

Main Results:

  • GPs viewed resilience training as potentially beneficial for mitigating workplace stress.
  • Concerns were raised about the practicalities of delivering training to time-constrained and stressed GPs.
  • Participants suggested that training should address both individual coping mechanisms and organizational issues.
  • Engagement challenges were anticipated, with those most in need potentially being least likely to participate.

Conclusions:

  • A multimodal and flexible approach to resilience training is recommended for General Practitioners (GPs).
  • Training should be tailored to individual needs and learning objectives, incorporating workshops in undergraduate curricula and general practices.
  • Integrating individual resilience strategies with organizational support is key to promoting sustained well-being in the GP workforce.
