Background:

  • Cryolipolysis is a proven method for reducing localized subcutaneous fat, including submental fat.
  • Lower temperatures (below -11°C) have not been extensively studied for submental cryolipolysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the safety and efficacy of submental fat reduction using cryolipolysis at lower temperatures and reduced treatment durations.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a novel cryolipolysis protocol for the submental region.

Main Methods:

  • 15 subjects received two cryolipolysis treatments using a small-volume applicator at -12°C for 45 minutes and -15°C for 30 minutes.
  • Safety was monitored via adverse event tracking; efficacy was assessed using digital photography, skin fold calipers, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

Main Results:

  • Skin fold calipers showed a mean fat reduction of 33%, while MRI indicated a mean reduction of 1.78 mm.
  • 80% of subjects reported satisfaction with the treatment, with mild side effects resolving within 10 weeks.

Conclusions:

  • Cryolipolysis utilizing colder temperatures and reduced treatment times is a safe and effective noninvasive option for submental fat reduction.
  • The study supports the use of this modified cryolipolysis protocol for improved patient outcomes in submental contouring.
