Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between vitiligo and body mass index (BMI).
  • To assess the potential association between vitiligo and obesity.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 200 vitiligo patients and 200 healthy controls.
  • Body mass index (BMI) was calculated from measured height and weight.
  • Multivariate logistic regression models were used for data analysis, adjusting for age and gender.

Main Results:

  • No significant association was found between vitiligo and overall BMI.
  • In vitiligo patients, a high BMI (≥30) was significantly associated with sudden onset (p=0.021) and presence of inflammation/pruritus (p=0.031).
  • No significant association was observed between vitiligo and low BMI (≤18.5).

Conclusions:

  • Vitiligo does not appear to be associated with a high BMI or obesity.
  • Obesity may not be a significant risk factor for vitiligo, unlike many other autoimmune conditions.
