Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Medicine
  • Pathology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), or histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a rare, benign condition causing cervical adenopathies.
  • The exact etiology of KFD remains unknown, presenting diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 9-year-old girl presented with cervical lymphadenopathy and fever.
  • Histologic examination of lymph nodes confirmed Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced spontaneous regression of adenopathies without any specific treatment.
  • This case aligns with the generally favorable prognosis of KFD.

Implications:

  • Demonstrates the self-limiting nature of KFD in pediatric cases.
  • Highlights the importance of accurate histopathological diagnosis for appropriate patient management.
  • Suggests conservative management may be sufficient for uncomplicated KFD.
