Pergolide effectively normalized prolactin levels in patients with prolactinoma, demonstrating superior efficacy and tolerability over bromocriptine. This dopamine agonist offers rapid euprolactinemia and improved compliance for treating prolactinomas.

Background:

  • Prolactinoma, a pituitary tumor, overproduces prolactin.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy and tolerability of bromocriptine and pergolide in treating prolactinoma.

Main Methods:

  • Ten patients with prolactinoma were treated with either bromocriptine (N=6) or pergolide (N=4).
  • Prolactin levels, tumor size, side effects, and compliance were monitored.

Main Results:

  • Both drugs significantly reduced prolactin levels.
  • Pergolide achieved rapid euprolactinemia in all patients at a low dose.
  • Bromocriptine showed an oscillatory prolactin pattern, with 3 patients not reaching euprolactinemia.
