Drying Shrinkage01:21

Drying Shrinkage

408
When hardened concrete is exposed to air with a relative humidity of less than 100 percent, it begins to lose the free water within its capillaries. As this water evaporates, the water initially adsorbed onto the calcium silicate hydrates migrates towards these now empty spaces and eventually evaporates as well. Over time, as more water leaves, the volume of the concrete decreases, a phenomenon known as drying shrinkage.
A portion of this drying shrinkage can be reversed; if the concrete is...

Multiple Regression01:25

Multiple Regression

4.1K
Multiple regression assesses a linear relationship between one response or dependent variable and two or more independent variables. It has many practical applications.
Farmers can use multiple regression to determine the crop yield based on more than one factor, such as water availability, fertilizer, soil properties, etc. Here, the crop yield is the response or dependent variable as it depends on the other independent variables. The analysis requires the construction of a scatter plot...

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacognosy
  • Agricultural Engineering
  • Analytical Chemistry

Background:

  • Scrophulariae Radix (SR) is a vital traditional Chinese medicine.
  • Traditional drying methods for SR lack standardization and efficiency.
  • Modern drying techniques require optimization for SR quality preservation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine optimal modern drying parameters for Scrophulariae Radix (SR).
  • To ensure the quality of dried SR aligns with pharmacopoeia standards.
  • To enhance the efficiency and standardization of SR primary processing.

Main Methods:

  • Orthogonal experimental design with seven factors across a three-stage drying process (drying-tempering-drying).
  • UPLC-TQ-MS analysis to quantify nine key compounds in dried SR samples.
  • Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and energy consumption evaluation.

Main Results:

  • Optimal parameters identified: Stage 1 (60°C, 50 Hz wind, 50% moisture), Stage 2 (24h tempering, 20°C), Stage 3 (60°C, 30 Hz wind).
  • Optimized SR exhibited comparable external properties and target compound profiles to genuine producing area samples.
  • The optimized method meets the 2015 Chinese Pharmacopoeia requirements.

Conclusions:

  • The established modern drying process effectively produces high-quality Scrophulariae Radix.
  • This optimized method improves drying time and processing efficiency.
  • It promotes normalization and standardization in Scrophulariae Radix primary processing.
